Chronology of Passion Week

By Robert D. Pace

(This outline serves as a teaching guide or it can be published as a bulletin insert on Palm Sunday for Christians to trace Christ's life during Passion Week.)

Palm Sunday:  Day of Adoration

Palm Sunday is when Christ made His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem and the crowds praised Him with the words: "Hosanna in the highest!" (MAT 21:1-11; MAR 11:1-11; LUK 19:29-40; JOH 12:12-19).

Jesus weeps over Jerusalem (LUK 19:41-44).

Monday:  Day of Authority

Jesus curses the fig tree (MAT 21:18-20; MAR 11:12-14) and cleanses the Temple (MAT 21:12-13; MAR 11:15-17; LUK 19:45-46).

Tuesday:  Day of Argument

Jesus teaches by parables in the Temple (MAT 21:23 to 22:14; MAR 11:27 to 12:9; LUK 20:1-16).

Jesus confounds the religious leaders of His day (MAT 22:15 to 23:36; MAR 12:13-40; LUK 20:20-47).

Jesus delivers the Olivet Discourse (MAT 24:1-25:46; MAR 13:1-37; LUK 21:5-36).

Wednesday:  Day of Aloneness

As far as the Bible is concerned this day appears to be blank in the Passion Week, but it is likely that Jesus and His disciples remained in retirement at Bethany from Tuesday evening until Thursday afternoon.

This is perhaps the day Jesus was anointed at Bethany (MAT 26:6-13; MAR 14:3-9; JOH 12:1-8).

Judas plots with Sanhedrin (MAT 26:1-5, 14-16; MAR 14:1-2, 10-11; LUK 22:1-6)

Thursday:  Day of Accomplishments

Jesus eats His Last Supper—the Passover meal (MAT 26:17-29; MAR 14:12-25; LUK 22:7-20).

Jesus delivers His last words to His disciples (JOH 13-17).

Jesus prays in the garden and is betrayed (MAT 26:36-56; MAR 14:32-52; LUK 22:39-51; JOH 18:1-13).

Friday:  Day of Anguish

Jesus is brought before Annas (JOH 18:12-14, 19-23) and then Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin (MAT 26:59-68; MAR 14:55-65; LUK 22:63-71; JOH 18:19-24).

Jesus is brought before Pilot (MAT 27:1-2, 11-14; MAR 15:1-5; LUK 23:1-5; JOH 18:28-38) then He's sent to Herod Antipas (LUK 23:6-12).

Jesus is condemned by Pilot and mocked (MAT 27:15-30; MAR 15:6-19; LUK 23:13-25; JOH 19:1-16).

Jesus is crucified at Golgotha (MAT 27:31-56; MAR 15:20-41; LUK 23:26-49; JOH 19:16-30).

Jesus is buried in Joseph's tomb (MAT 27:57-60; MAR 15:42-47; LUK 23:50-55; JOH 19:31-42).

Saturday:  Day of Absence

Pilot seals Jesus' tomb and appoints a guard (MAT 27:62-66; LUK 23:56).

Sunday:  Day of Appearances

Jesus rises and shows Himself to Mary Magdalene and select women (MAR 16:9-11; JOH 20:11-18; MAT 28:8-10; MAR 16:8; LUK 24:9-11).

Jesus shows Himself to Peter (LUK 24:34, cf.1Cor.15:5).

Jesus reveals Himself to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (MAR 16:12-13; LUK 24:13-35).

Jesus shows Himself to the disciples without Thomas (MAR 16:14; LUK 24:36-49; JOH 20:19-23).
